Today is Another Opportunity!

Today is Another Opportunity! That is what comes up on my phone every day, as a daily reminder that I have the opportunity to make this day a great day.
With just coming off of the 4 th of July and celebrating our nations Independence Day, we so often take for granted what we have in this country. Freedom. Freedom to act, think, or speak as one wants, to not be enslaved or subjected to dictatorial government.
I was in a meeting just a few weeks back with a local 401k advisor that was updating the non-profit board that I'm a part of, on our investment performance. At the end of our meeting, he put in perspective not only our investments in the stock market, but our lives as U.S. citizens. He was not born American, but moved to the United States when he was a young child from the Middle East with his mother, after his parents got a divorce. His mother remarried a small business owner in western Wisconsin. This boy grew up going to school and working hard. When he graduated high school, he told his stepfather he wanted to go to college. His stepfather told him that's great, but the only way you're going to be able to go to college is to join the military. So, that's exactly what he did. He finished his degree and served in the U.S. military both domestic and abroad before starting his career in banking.
Recently, his father visited the U.S. for the first time. When arriving, his father was in awe. He told his son, "You live in heaven." What an unbelievable perspective, when we as U.S. citizens so often take for granted what we have. As this individual continued to share his story and perspective, you couldn't help but be drawn by his life experiences, his love for this country, and the amazing life that we are all able to experience because of being citizens of the United States of America. Whether the stock market goes up, or the stock market goes down, we are the most resilient country in the world. Whether there are tragedy's that occur because of terrorism or mother-nature, we are a resilient people. We find a way.
We are afforded so many luxuries because of being American, that without either visiting other countries, or hearing stories such as this, we so often take it for granted.
As a wife, mother, and business owner, the one freedom that drives me every day is the freedom of choice. We can choose to be victims of our circumstances, or we can choose to take control of our attitude, our future, and our life. As my children get older and begin their own lives, the one intolerance I have is for them to blame someone else for what they aren't able to do, or what they didn't do. As soon as we give up that freedom to choose, that freedom to take responsibility for the lives we create, we give up our freedom to be who we were meant to be. In many respects, as soon as we relinquish our responsibility and right to choose, we give that control away and give up the very freedoms that were fought for us so many generations ago.
As a spouse, parent, and/or business leader, you have the freedom to choose how you engage each and every day. Take ownership, take pride, but most importantly appreciate the freedom that you have been given to live in the greatest country on earth.
Happy Independence Day! Today is another Opportunity!
